Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling is often about one particular issue that is adversly affecting your life such as a bereavement or relationship breakdown. Counselling is often shorter term usually once a week. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is usually longer term and may be more than once a week. It would involve thinking how your thoughts and actions may be unconscious (out of awareness)often linked with childhood experience. A psychotherapist has had a lengthy training including their own long term psychotherapy. However, there is an overlap between the two.

What can I expect if I make an appointment to see you?

We would meet for one session to assess if how I work is the best way forward for you and to see if we could work together. This meeting carries no further obligation if you do not wish to continue.

Sometimes it is appropriate to meet for a few more sessions before deciding to commit to open - ended therapy.
